Acromioclavicular (AC) Joints Projections
Patient Preparation
- Explain the procedure to the patient.
- Remove jewelry or metallic objects from the shoulder and upper chest area.
- Position the patient comfortably, standing or seated.
- Use lead shielding as appropriate.
BASIC PROJECTIONS
1. AP Projection — AC Joints (Bilateral)
Positioning:
- Patient standing or seated, facing the IR.
- Both shoulders in the same plane.
- Arms relaxed at the sides.
- For stress view (if indicated), patient may hold weights in hands.
Central Ray (CR):
- Perpendicular to IR.
- Directed to midline at level of AC joints.
SID:
- 100–110 cm (40–44 inches).
Collimation:
- Include both AC joints and lateral ends of clavicles.
Common Pathologies Demonstrated
- AC joint separation or dislocation.
- Osteoarthritis or degenerative changes.
- Trauma to lateral clavicle or acromion.
